Programming with PHP: An Introduction for RPGers
PHP - the most popular scripting language on the web - has
now landed on System i. Millions of web programmers use PHP
to create interactive, dynamic web applications quickly and
easily, and now you can join them!
Just like RPG programmers, PHP users tend to focus on
"getting the job done" and the simplicity and power of the
language reflects that design perspective. PHP also
incorporates a straightforward object model that greatly
assists procedural programmers ease into the world of Object
Orientation.
This session will introduce you to the basics of programming
in PHP on System i by drawing comparisons with the RPG IV
language we all know and love. We will also introduce you to
some of the System i specific features that have been
incorporated into the language. As you will see, PHP is both
fun and easy to learn.
Extending Your Application Set with PHP
In this session, we'll talk about ways that PHP can extend
the range of applications available on your system and how
it can interact with your conventional RPG applications.
Topics include:
- Utilizing Open Source Software to fill gaps in your
application inventory
- Calling RPG and CL programs and commands from PHP
- Accessing system functions from PHP applications
- Using the new Zend Bridge to interfacing with your
existing 5250 applications
- Blending new PHP functionality into your existing web
applications
A basic knowledge of PHP is assumed, but by no means
essential.
The New RDi: Rational Developer for System i
The Remote System Explorer (RSE) that is currently packaged
with WDSC now has a new home in RDi beginning with V6R1. In
this session, we'll first take a quick look at RSE for those
who have not yet had occasion to learn the joys of
developing RPG using a modern development tool. Then, for
those who
are already addicted to RSE in WDSc, we'll explore the
enhancements to RSE and it's related tools - most notably a
new screen designer and the Application Diagrammer.
New Features for RPG in V6R1
The V6R1 release of RPG IV introduces many powerful new
features - including the ability to specify files in
subprocedures and even to pass files as parameters! In this
session Jon will introduce you to these new features and
discuss how they can be utilized to power up your
applications.
In addition, V6R1 will be the first release to require
program object
conversions since the V3R6 CISC to RISC move. But there's no
need to panic - this process is much easier and faster than
the CISC ot RISC conversion! This session will provide a
brief overview of what your shop should be doing to prepare
for the installation of V6R1.

Susan left IBM in 1999 to devote more time to
teaching and consulting. Together with Jon
Paris, she now runs Partner400, a System i, iSeries
and AS/400 education and consulting company focused
on application modernization.
