IBM ILE and Open Source Toolkits

February 21, 2012

Noon to 1:00 PM

Please join us on February 21st for a presentation about ways to use Open Source Toolkits in the IBM Native Environment (ILE).

What is the buzz about Open Source Toolkits anyway? What are they, and why are they becoming increasingly popular? Well they are free aren’t they? But are they relevant in the context of the mission critical ILE Environment using RPG and/or COBOL? Why is IBM embracing them and contributing to their success in major ways? How is IBM contributing, and what are their favored toolkits? Are they secure? Are they as good as native apps? What about mobile? Can regular AS/400 folks participate in this new world, and if so where do they start? Where do they go from there?

User Interface Technologies (UI) have been a major challenge for the IBM ILE Environment for more than a decade.  Throstur Gudmundsson our VP of Education, will present his views about the merits of Open Web Technologies, and how they can help transform the ILE Environment into the modern world. Throstur will also demonstrate practical examples using some of the same Web Technologies that IBM has chosen as its internal standard in its Websphere Application Servers, without using WebSphere, but instead connecting directly to ILE programs through the Apache Webserver that is already included in the basic IBM i software licenses. RPG examples used in the session are compiled at V5R4.

Open discussions are encouraged, both about the material presented as well as the format of our educational events.  In our February 21st session at the Brio's Tuscan Grille, we are going to experiment with the time of day that we will hold our session.  As always our regular session will start at 12pm, but if we gain enough interest we will present the session later in the day at 6pm.  We are doing this to see if it is easier for some members to attend our sessions after work instead of in the middle of the day.

So please state your preferred hour when you reserve your seat.
